Common questions
Does Medicare cover a hair transplant?
Usually not. Hair transplants for pattern hair loss are treated as cosmetic, so there is generally no Medicare rebate and private health cover rarely helps. Your clinic will confirm at consultation.
What is the difference between FUE and FUT?
FUE removes follicles one at a time with a small punch, which leaves tiny dot scars and suits people who wear their hair short. FUT removes a thin strip of scalp that is divided into grafts, which leaves one fine line scar that longer hair covers. 54 of the 56 clinic locations we checked offer FUE and 14 say they offer FUT.
How many grafts will I need?
It depends on how much area needs covering and how much donor hair you have. As a rough guide, refining a hairline can take 750 to 1,500 grafts and a receding hairline with some thinning behind it often takes 1,500 to 2,500. A doctor estimates your number at consultation.
How long before I see results?
Transplanted hairs usually shed in the first few weeks. New growth tends to start around three to four months, most people see a clear change by six to nine months, and the full result takes about 12 months, sometimes longer at the crown.
Is the consultation free?
Often. 28 of the 56 clinic locations we checked advertise a free consultation. Some charge a fee. The published fees we found are between $50 and $200, and some clinics take it off the procedure price if you go ahead.
